Oeko-Test Magazine was started by a few journalists in 1985. It evaluates and ranks various consumer products for its effect on health & environment, helping stores and manufacturers to improve their products. It is similar to Consumer Reports in the US, but with a much stronger emphasis on consumer safety and health.

Oeko-Test uses the following rating system when testing products: Sehr gut (engl. very good), gut (engl. good), befriedigend (engl. satisfying), ausreichend (engl. sufficient), mangelhaft (engl. inadequat), ungenügend (engl. unsatisfactory). As of March 2007, they separated the testing of certified natural skin care from tests of conventional cosmetics. Since then Lavera products have been ranked against other certified natural brands.

Lavera products have been tested over 350 times since June of 1994. More than 320 Lavera products have received "Very Good" reviews. In the February 2008 issue, our Self-Tanner was the only natural cosmetic product to receive an "Very Good" rating.

We have to admit we are a little biased in favor of the Oeko-Test Magazine. It rated Lavera #1 as the Greenest Beauty Brand ahead of 32 other companies (ahead of Dr. Hauschka, Weleda, Estee Lauder and Loreal), after testing over 1800 products from 70 different product groups! In 2009, Lavera did it again, beating out 36 companies that manufacture cosmetic brands such as Dove, Aveda, Avon and Kiehls to receive the #1 ranking from Oeko-Test.

In August 2009, Lavera scored Top Marks in an Oeko-Test Lipstick Review that included Dr. Hauschka, L'Oreal, Chanel and Maybelline.
