Good for the skin & the coral reefs: lavera sun protection is reef friendly
Did you know that conventional sunscreens are banned by Hawaiian Reef Law ? With effect from January 2021, Hawaiian law will ban the use of octinoxate and oxybenzone as UV filters in sunscreen products. This is because these synthetic UV filters are not only suspected of triggering allergic reactions in humans, they could also be harmful to coral reefs. Hawaii has now decided that such UV filters have no place on the scenic beaches of the archipelago.
Around 14,000 tons of sunscreen are estimated to end up in the oceans worldwide every year. On highly frequented beaches, the impact of this is all the more obvious. But don't be fooled into thinking the danger is only overseas.
Readings taken in the Baltic Sea in 2015 also revealed the two suspect UV filters. Octinoxate and oxybenzone not only damage coral reefs, but are also migrating further and further up the food chain. One way to avoid polluting the seas with the two synthetic UV filters is to switch to mineral UV filters, preferably nature-based ones.
