Cellulite and stretch marks – what's really behind them?

Cellulite und Dehnungsstreifen – was steckt wirklich dahinter?

Many women are familiar with them, hardly anyone likes them – and yet cellulite and stretch marks are completely normal. They are not a sign of poor self-care, not a flaw, and certainly not a reason for shame. We explain how both develop, what you can actively do about them, and which skincare routines truly make a difference.

How do cellulite and stretch marks develop?

Cellulite – colloquially known as "orange peel skin" – is a non-inflammatory change in the subcutaneous fatty tissue that manifests as a dimpled texture on the skin's surface. It develops because female connective tissue is structured differently from male connective tissue: in women, collagen fibres run vertically to the skin's surface, making it easier for fat cells to be pushed upwards and create the characteristic uneven texture. Oestrogen also plays a role, as it makes collagen fibres more elastic. In short: cellulite is primarily a matter of biology.

Stretch marks form when connective tissue is stretched rapidly and significantly – for example, during growth spurts, pregnancy, or rapid changes in body weight. The connective tissue in the dermis, which is responsible for the skin's elasticity, tears beneath the surface. Fresh stretch marks often appear reddish-purple, as the blood vessels shine through. Over time, they fade into pale scars but remain visible. The areas most commonly affected include the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, and upper arms.

Genetic predisposition, lack of physical activity, an unbalanced diet, and a gradual decline in collagen production with age can all contribute to both conditions – though they are not the only causes.

What you can actively do

There is no miracle cure for cellulite and stretch marks – that is the honest answer. What does exist are effective ways to noticeably improve their appearance.

Exercise

is one of the most powerful tools. Regular training improves circulation, strengthens connective tissue, and stimulates collagen production. Particularly effective are exercises that specifically target the typical problem areas – thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and upper arms.

Diet

also plays a role: vitamin C, for instance, can support the cross-linking of collagen fibres, strengthening connective tissue from within. Drinking enough water and reducing processed food intake helps the skin stay supple and elastic.

Massages and contrast showers

stimulate circulation and can visibly improve skin texture. A regular dry-brush massage, done in the morning before showering, quickly becomes part of your routine – and makes a real difference.

Targeted skincare

can visibly reduce the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks and improve skin elasticity – provided the right active ingredients work in the right combination.

The right skincare makes the difference

This is exactly where the new lavera Cellulite 2-Phase Body Serum comes in.

What makes it special: it combines two powerful phases – one aqueous, one oil-based – that deliver and lock in moisture while simultaneously reducing the visible appearance of cellulite and stretch marks*. The result is improved skin elasticity and a smooth, well-nourished feel.

The combination of organic rosemary and organic caffeine is key: organic rosemary is valued for its stimulating and toning effect on the skin, helping to create a visibly smoother surface. Caffeine is known for its ability to stimulate microcirculation – visibly firming and tightening the skin.
