Traditional harvesting of shea butter
The nuts of the shea trees, also called Shi or Karité trees, are still harvested today in the traditional cultivation area in Central Africa, south of the Sahara. The 15 m tall trees, resembling European oaks, are considered sacred in their African countries of origin and must neither be cut down nor harmed.
The "butter tree" can live up to 300 years and only reaches its full fruit production at 25 years. The cultivation, harvest, and production of shea butter are, according to local traditions, exclusively controlled by women.
Beauty benefits of shea butter
In cosmetics, shea butter is used because of its versatile and particularly intensive nourishing properties. It contains a high proportion of unsaponifiable ingredients such as oleic acid – this does not dissolve on contact with water and has a re-fatting effect.
Shea butter forms a protective shield on your skin, preventing moisture from escaping. It is excellent for caring for dry skin.
