Interview with Dr. Henrike Neuhoff - Head of the Science Department at lavera Natural Beauty
How does Natural Beauty differ from conventional beauty care?
Certified Natural Beauty products use only natural ingredients or nature-identical ingredients. Environmentally harmful substances such as silicones, paraffins, or solid and liquid microplastics, which are found in conventional cosmetics, are strictly prohibited in certified Natural Beauty products.
How can I tell that it is certified Natural Beauty?
This can be recognized by the NATRUE or COSMOS Ecocert seals. By the way, the NATRUE association was founded in 2007 jointly by lavera and other Natural Beauty manufacturers.
These seals were created to establish binding standards for certified Natural Beauty, guarantee consumers verified quality on the cosmetics shelf, and distinguish “greenwashing” from genuine Natural Beauty.
"...because what is made from nature can also be processed by nature again."
lavera Natural Beauty relies exclusively on certified Natural Beauty. Why is this so important for the skin?
Synthetic cosmetics often contain artificial fragrances and preservatives. In certified Natural Beauty, however, only natural ingredients inspired by nature are used. Numerous natural oils, fats, and waxes are employed, as well as natural proteins, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and plant extracts or power ingredients like fermented hyaluronic acids, Q10, and much more.
Depending on the plant, there are various skin-beneficial properties such as moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, sebum-regulating, astringent, soothing, antioxidant, etc. This means that these natural ingredients not only sustainably care for the skin but also provide additional positive support and supply valuable substances that the skin may lack for an intact skin barrier and cell membrane. This allows the skin to naturally regenerate well.
Why is Natural Beauty also good for the environment?
Silicones and other synthetically produced substances, which are used for example in conventional cosmetics, enter the groundwater through shampoos, conditioners, and soaps, but also through facial creams, makeup removers, and more, and burden the environment. They settle in rivers and from there reach the sea.
To protect the skin and our environment, lavera uses biodegradable formulas¹ of 100% natural origin, 100% natural fragrances, and produces over 300 extracts in organic quality itself. These can be easily returned to the biological cycle – because what is made from nature can also be processed by nature again.
And what about the packaging of Natural Beauty products?
Recycling is a major topic in Natural Beauty. On the one hand, it’s about conserving natural resources, but on the other hand, it’s also about reducing CO2 emissions. For example, lavera consistently uses reusable materials like recyclates for product packaging. These are materials made from old water, juice, and milk packaging. The bottles of our lavera body lotions, shampoos, conditioners, and shower gels are already made from 100% recycled material.
We can see the impact of this change alone with the following example: In 2022 alone, by switching the packaging of our body lotions to 100% recyclate content, we saved a total of 16 tons of CO2 – which is equivalent to about 17,200 washing cycles of a washing machine at 60 degrees.
