A plant conquers the world

Did you know that the cotton plant has been cultivated for 3,000 years in countries like India and America? From there, this noble raw material made its long journey to Europe in ancient times – the ancient Greeks and Romans imported this luxurious good from the Orient. The fine and soft cotton texture far surpassed the sheep's wool used for clothing until then and quickly became a highly traded commodity. Wealthy citizens wore pure cotton fabric as garments – not least because of the fine texture and white color, which stand for pure purity.

African primal plant

The cotton plant belongs to the mallow family and is native to South Africa. Today, it grows in warm, dry countries on the American, Asian, or African continents. The cultivation areas are also known as the so-called "cotton belt." These are regions with a hot climate, little frost, and moist soils. The frost-sensitive plant can grow up to 2.5 meters tall. Its flowers shine in yellow, pink, or pure white tones. The seeds are covered with the typical "tuft" of long seed hairs and contain, among other things, the valuable cottonseed oil. Cotton is picked either by hand or with special harvesting machines.

Cotton – an indispensable raw material

The fibers known as "cotton" are obtained from the seed hairs of the shrubs. These fluffy fibers can be spun by hand or using weaving machines into fine yarn. The lightweight and fine cotton fabric has been used for centuries to produce garments – across cultures. No wonder, as the fabric fits particularly well against the skin, is breathable, and durable. The elaborate hand processing was replaced by industrialization in the 18th century: with the invention of the weaving machine, cotton could henceforth be spun mechanically and in large quantities. This gave the raw material another major boost – cotton finally became suitable for mass production.
