Ginseng is one of the best-known medicinal plants from the Far East. The plant originates from China, Russia, and Korea. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng has been a popular medicinal plant for thousands of years because it exerts its healing effects in almost every area of application. We at lavera Natural Beauty also use the special power of this impressive plant and incorporate it as a high-quality extract in some natural deodorants – for long-lasting protection against odor formation.
Ginseng – The "Star" among Chinese medicinal plants
The ginseng plant has long been regarded as a natural tonic, whose balancing effects have been proven in numerous scientific studies over the past 50 years. Hardly any other medicinal plant has been researched as extensively and intensively as ginseng. The "power tuber" can enhance the physical and mental performance of stressed or weakened people and strengthen the immune system. The fact that ginseng also found its way to Europe as a natural remedy is thanks to an Arab physician from the 9th century. He brought this valuable plant to Europe, where it has since been considered, among other things, a natural aphrodisiac. Did you know that ginseng used to be worth three times as much as gold? No wonder, as the supposedly "life-extending plant" has been highly valued for thousands of years. Today, it is cultivated in countries such as Korea, Japan, Russia, and North America.
Multitalented Ginseng
Sophisticated medicinal plant
Ginseng is a plant that can grow up to one meter tall with greenish-yellow flowers. It prefers nutrient-rich, moist soils and is very demanding and requires careful care. Growing ginseng requires patience and a lot of perseverance. Only after at least four years does the root contain the highest concentration of active ingredients and is ready for harvest, which is traditionally done by hand. The ginseng root contains, among other things, carbohydrates, essential amino acids, peptides, proteins, as well as minerals, vitamins, and trace elements. However, the most important are the so-called "ginsenosides," which belong to the group of secondary plant compounds. Most of the known effects of this medicinal plant are attributed to them.
The name says it all
Ginseng means "human plant" in Chinese because the branched root resembles the shape of a human body. But that's not all. Its extensive healing power is also reflected in its name. The botanical term "Panax" refers to the genus of the so-called Araliaceae or ivy family. It comes from Latin and translates to "all-healing" – the perfect description for a multitasker like ginseng!
