Small grains, long tradition
Oats originate from Northern Europe. Archaeological finds show that the history of this "ancient grain" dates back to the Bronze Age. While it was considered a weed or at best used as animal feed in ancient times, oats now have a millennia-long success story as a valuable food. The reason lies in the high nutrient concentration of this power grain. Today, we love the "evergreen" among native grasses as hearty or tenderly melting breakfast flakes, as a healthy baking ingredient, or in the form of oat drink as a lactose-free alternative.
Oats – Real Power Grains
Oats – Native Summer Grain
Oats are mainly grown as a summer cereal in Europe. In this country, the so-called seed oats (botanically known as "Avena sativa") are the most widespread and also the best known. They originate from northern Germany and require a temperate climate with plenty of rainfall and little frost to thrive. Therefore, they are mostly sown in central and northern Europe, e.g., in northern France, parts of Great Britain, southern Sweden, and northern Germany.
But the popular grain is not only found on our continent: there are up to 30 different species worldwide. The oat plant belongs to the family of sweet grasses. The numerous oat grains are found in the panicles of the plant.
Power grain for strong nerves … and well-cared-for skin
Packed with many vitamins and minerals, especially oat straw and seeds are considered natural remedies for weak nerves and states of weakness (e.g., after prolonged illnesses). The "good old" oat is also perfectly suited as a natural energy boost for more endurance during workouts. Its grain contains many valuable B vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, and secondary plant compounds such as sterols, saponins, and flavonoids.
In 2017, oats were even named "Medicinal Plant of the Year" by the University of Würzburg, among other things, for their positive effect on the skin. For sensitive and irritated skin, the valuable organic oat extracts are a true "guardian angel." The secret lies in a special ingredient called "Avenanthramide." This is a substance with, among other things, antioxidant properties. It has a soothing and anti-inflammatory effect on irritated and sensitive skin.
