Plum trees have many relatives: they belong to the genus of rose family plants, which also includes cherry, almond, and peach trees. Most species are cultivated ornamental shrubs (e.g., cherry laurel), available in many popular varieties, as well as ancient crops. The term "Prunus domestica" comes from Latin and translates to "plum" or "cultivated plum." Plum trees can grow up to 10 meters tall and prefer the temperate climate of the northern hemisphere. The plum has a long history: even in ancient times, the aromatic fruit was considered a delicacy, while the tree resin was used as a natural remedy. After the flowering period, the harvest season begins—depending on the variety—around the end of July and can last until October.
