Organic Prickly Pear – The Desert Queen for Silky Smooth Hair

The Prickly Pear (Opuntia ficus-indica), also known as the prickly pear cactus, is one of Mexico's oldest cultivated plants. For hair care, we use the extract from the stems (cladodes) of the plant – it is especially rich in polysaccharides, flavonoids as well as vitamins A, B, and C. This combination makes it a powerful active ingredient for dry, unruly hair.

Opuntia ficus-indica belongs to the cactus family (Cactaceae) and originally comes from Mexico, where it was already cultivated by the Aztecs. The plant can grow up to 5 meters tall and is recognizable by its characteristic flat shoot pads – the cladodes. It blooms in bright yellow or pink and bears the eponymous, edible prickly pears. Thanks to its extreme drought tolerance, it now thrives worldwide in arid and semi-arid climates.

The effect of organic prickly pear extract is mainly based on its polysaccharides (complex sugars): They form a fine protective film on the hair surface that binds moisture, seals the cuticle, and thus creates the anti-frizz effect.
