The Gold of the Andes

The quinoa plant originally comes from South America, where it has been known for about 6000 years as a nutrient- and energy-rich staple food of the Incas. It is therefore also known by the names Inca rice and Inca wheat. Since then, quinoa has been cultivated in Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru. The interesting thing is that quinoa is actually not a cereal, but like beetroot and spinach, belongs to the goosefoot family. However, since the seeds can be processed in the same way as other cereals, quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat are often referred to as "pseudocereals".

Powerful, resilient, enduring – the strengths of the quinoa plant

The seeds, which are cooked similarly to rice, are only about 3 millimeters small. The robust quinoa plant grows at an altitude of around 4000 meters and can reach up to 3 meters in height. It is truly no diva: extreme weather and poor soils pose no problem for it.

Weather-wise, the resilient powerhouse plant remains calm no matter what: it patiently endures temperatures from minus 8 to plus 38 degrees without major issues – even frost and extreme drought do not affect it. It can ideally adapt to changing climate conditions and has therefore been considered one of the most important plants of the Andean region for thousands of years.

Powerhouses in mini format

Incredible how many power nutrients fit into these tiny seeds! Quinoa seeds are true powerhouses: they contain many important minerals such as magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, and manganese. The golden, red, or black quinoa seeds also contain numerous essential vitamins and plant-based protein.

Quinoa is THE superfood for people with gluten intolerance and impresses at first glance at the nutrient table: The iron content of the valuable quinoa seeds is even 100% higher than that of wheat or rye. Thus, quinoa ranks at the very top of the podium of the healthiest seeds. High-quality proteins and essential fatty acids, such as the important lysine, are also found in the South American power plant.
