Someone here wants to reach great heights: Vanilla, with the botanical name "Vanilla planifolia," is a climbing orchid plant that can grow up to 25 meters tall. Thanks to its strong stems and "sticky" aerial roots, it manages to reach high tree canopies and is thus a true climbing artist. It belongs to the family of so-called orchidaceae and loves warmth: its original home is in Mexico, but nowadays it is mainly cultivated in Madagascar as well as in Central America and Indonesia, among other places. 

Did you know that harvesting real vanilla is very labor-intensive? The drying and fermentation process often takes up to 18 months because the pods are harvested green and must be dried and fermented through a multi-step process for the vanilla pods to develop their intense aroma.
