Since the menthol content in water mint is somewhat milder, it is also known as the "gentle sister" of peppermint. Water mint belongs to the Lamiaceae family and can grow up to 80 cm tall. It thrives in moist ditches and swampy soil, but also fully submerged in lakes. It bears small white to light purple flowers. Water mint contains, among other things, essential oils, tannins, and menthol.
