Palm oil – a valuable raw material

Palm oil is an important renewable resource that has many positive properties.

There is no other oil that can be produced as efficiently and yield as much as palm oil. The yield of the palm oil plant per hectare is about four times higher and requires around four times less land¹. This is because you need three to four oils (from soy, sunflower, coconut, and rapeseed) to achieve the same yield that can be obtained from the palm oil fruit alone.

That’s why we advocate for sustainable RSPO palm oil cultivation and support ecological farming methods in rainforest areas through our membership. We use RSPO-MB palm oil derivatives (MB = mass balance), for which there are currently no alternatives.

RSPO advocates for sustainable palm oil cultivation

In 2004, WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) founded the international interest group RSPO – the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil. The members of the Round Table include, besides environmental organizations and other associations, primarily companies and institutions from the palm oil supply chain, including plantation operators, traders, and industrial consumers of palm oil – as well as investors or banks and, of course, manufacturers of products containing palm oil raw materials. Worldwide, there are currently 5592 registered members, with 593² in Germany alone. Germany is considered one of the most important buyers of certified palm oil and one of the driving forces for sustainable palm oil cultivation³.

What are the goals of the RSPO?

The members of the RSPO take joint responsibility, voluntarily commit to it, and promote sustainable palm oil cultivation.

The vision of the RSPO is to “transform markets to make sustainable palm oil the norm”.

Sustainable in this case means keeping an eye on the impact on the climate, the environment, and biodiversity, and trying to prevent, for example, the clearing of additional rainforest areas for the cultivation of oil palm trees, thereby protecting the habitats of endangered animal species. Slash-and-burn practices are prohibited.

With the help of a comprehensive set of rules and documentation requirements, the raw materials derived from the oil palm fruit are controlled from cultivation to delivery to the market and are more transparent.

Through appropriate on-site training and support from the RSPO, not only is compliance with the RSPO standard ensured, but yields on the plantations can even be increased.

19% of the total global palm oil production already comes from RSPO-certified plantations⁵.

We are committed to sustainable RSPO palm oil cultivation and support ecological farming methods in rainforest areas through our RSPO membership, which has been in place since 2018. Since August 2022, every product of the lavera brand that contains palm oil or palm kernel oil derivatives is RSPO MB certified.

We do not use pure palm oil, but only RSPO MB palm oil derivatives (MB = mass balance), for which there are currently no alternatives.

What are derivatives?

Palm oil is extracted from the palm fruit (pulp) and palm kernel oil from the palm kernels. These oils are processed multiple times (fractionated) to produce high-quality derivatives and raw materials containing palm oil molecules. The derivatives and raw materials are used as natural ingredients in a wide range of certified natural cosmetic products. Only a small percentage (about 1-2%) of the total palm raw material production is used in cosmetic products (except soaps)⁶.
