Everything you need to know about highlighters
What types of highlighters & blushes are there and which one is best for me? We are happy to answer these and other questions for you.
Basically, three different textures can be distinguished in highlighters and blushes: powder, cream, or liquid.
Powder texture
Easy to use, perfect for makeup beginners, blend and build up easily
Cream texture
Easy to blend, ideal for dry skin and on the go, can be applied with the finger
Liquid texture
Ideal for particularly dry skin, provides the skin with additional moisture and care
Where do you apply blush, and where do you apply highlighter?
Blush: Below the cheekbones
Highlighter: On and above the cheekbones, under the eyebrows, shoulders, décolleté
What is a highlighter used for?
A highlighter creates different beauty effects. Depending on where you apply it, you can "magically" enhance your best features:
In the inner corner of the eye: Opens up your gaze.
Cheekbones: Accentuates your natural bone structure and can make your face appear slimmer.
Along the bridge of the nose: Makes the nose look smaller.
Above the upper lip: Dab the highlighter on the cupid’s bow and the center of the lower lip. Makes the mouth appear fuller.
In your foundation: Mix a little liquid highlighter with your foundation. This gives your complexion a gentle glow.
Bronzer – how to use it correctly
Is a bronzer already an all-time favorite for you, or are you still hesitating to finally try it out? If you are more of a makeup beginner, our tips will surely help you get the hang of it quickly. That way, your question "How do I use bronzer correctly?" will be a thing of the past – promised!
Where do I apply bronzer? And how do I use bronzer correctly?
A bronzer highlights the areas of the face that are naturally more tanned, known as "sun terraces": cheekbones, forehead, nose, and chin. The most important thing is to blend the bronzer well to avoid unsightly edges and unevenness. Gently test to find the right amount of bronzer for your skin type.
How do you blend bronzer?
Powder Bronzer: Pick up some bronzer with a brush, tap off the excess powder on the back of your hand, and then apply the brush to your cheekbones. Blend it upwards towards the ears. For a fresh look, you can also apply some bronzer to your nose and chin. It’s best to apply the bronzer with small, circular motions to avoid harsh edges.
Bronzing Cream: Apply your cream bronzer with your fingers or a brush. Apply the bronzer to your cheeks, jawline, around the temples, and on both sides of the nose. Make sure to blend gently here as well.
Do I need a special bronzer brush?
If you're wondering which brush is suitable for bronzer, here is a small selection for you. One thing upfront: investing in a suitable bronzer brush is definitely worth it if you want to achieve an even result. Your choice should be a large, angled brush. By the way: this brush is also great for cream bronzers.
What is the difference between bronzer and blush?
Rouge and Bronzer are among the most important makeup products for a fresh complexion. Unfortunately, they are often confused at first glance. However, they pursue different beauty goals.
Rouge: Gives your cheeks a fresh, rosy color and essentially mimics the natural blushing of the skin. A pleasant side effect: tired skin is skillfully concealed and your makeup instantly looks much fresher.
Bronzer: On the other hand, gives your skin a warm, sun-kissed touch and adds more dimension and depth.
What is bronzing?
The make-up trend Bronzing describes contouring the face and highlighting individual facial areas using a bronzer. This simple make-up method makes your complexion look like it’s fresh from a summer vacation and is also well suited for make-up beginners.
What does contouring mean?
With this makeup technique, you can highlight your best facial features or the ones you particularly like and conceal others. This works best with a bronzer, contouring stick, or a contouring palette with several shades. Makeup professionals can also use self-tanning cream for contouring. You can find out exactly how to do this in our post on the self-tanning routine.
Make-up trend strobing – how it works
Do you want to give your face more expression? Try strobing! With this natural makeup trend, you can naturally highlight your best features beautifully. The best part: strobing is easier and less complicated to apply than contouring, making it especially suitable for makeup beginners. What are you waiting for?
Strobing = Accentuating with targeted, bright highlights
For this makeup technique, you only need a good highlighter that shimmers lightly but doesn’t sparkle too much and is a bit lighter than your skin tone. Applied to the bridge of the nose, cheekbones, cupid’s bow, and chin, this makeup trick creates a glowing complexion. Extra tip: To give your face even more freshness, you can also apply some blush (“blushing”). It blends perfectly with the highlighter and accentuates the desired facial areas even more. This makeup technique makes your face look youthful, refreshed, and natural.
What comes first – strobing or makeup?
Strobing or contouring always comes AFTER your skincare and foundation in your styling routine:
- Primer
- Foundation, tinted day cream
- Strobing/contouring with highlighters, blushes, or bronzers
