Why is waterproof mascara so difficult in Natural Beauty?
Conventional waterproof mascaras rely on synthetic film formers & polymers. These ingredients create a highly effective water-repellent film around the lashes. However, in certified Natural Beauty, they are not permitted – neither under the NATRUE nor the COSMOS standard.
Additionally, there are other substances in classic formulas that we do not want in Natural Beauty:
- Mineral oils & paraffin wax are petroleum-based and prohibited in Natural Beauty.
- Silicones are synthetic and not natural-compliant.
What this means for Natural Beauty manufacturers:
As a Natural Beauty manufacturer, we rely on plant-based waxes, natural film formers & plant-based oils. This is challenging for several reasons:
- Natural waxes like organic carnauba wax or rice wax offer some water resistance but are not sufficient on their own
- Plant oils improve adhesion & smoothness but also make the formula softer
- Damar resin (lac tree wax) can be used as a natural film former – but is tricky to dose
- The balance between adhesion, flexibility & water resistance is extremely difficult to achieve without synthetic auxiliaries
- At the same time, the mascara must remain easy to remove gently – without harsh removers
The result: Many Natural Beauty brands have so far decided against waterproof formulas. At lavera, we have now taken the step and developed a NATRUE-compliant, water-resistant mascara.
The key ingredients at a glance
In the two new Water Resistant Mascaras, we rely on a carefully balanced combination of natural waxes, plant-based film formers, and nourishing ingredients – without silicones, mineral oil, or microplastics.
The (water-resistant) active ingredients come from natural sources, such as rice wax or organic carnauba wax. Organic shea butter, organic castor oil, and organic sunflower oil provide an extra dose of care. For color pigments that deliver a deep and intense black, we also use mineral iron oxide.
What this means in practice:
The combination of carnauba wax, damar resin, rice wax & organic carnauba wax creates a natural protective film around each individual eyelash. This film is water-repellent enough to withstand rain and sweat – and at the same time flexible enough to be gently removed with an oil-based makeup remover & warm water. No harsh removers, no rubbing, no eyelash loss.
The result: Both mascaras are NATRUE-certified, vegan, silicone-free, mineral oil-free, microplastic-free – and dermatologically as well as ophthalmologically tested. Also suitable for contact lens wearers.
How to properly apply and remove waterproof mascara
Water-resistant mascara is waxier and therefore requires a slightly different technique when applying compared to classic formulas. To ensure the result really holds and your lashes stay well cared for, you should keep the following in mind:
- From root to tip: Place the brush directly at the lash root and pull it upwards with a slight zigzag motion – this ensures maximum thickening and lift
- Layer by layer: Apply the mascara in two to three thin layers instead of one thick one – this creates volume without clumping
- Lower lashes: Hold the brush vertically and use the tip (especially with the Butterfly Effect Mascara) for precise definition
- Let dry briefly: Wait a moment between layers – this helps the formula hold even better
Removing makeup: Gentle but effective
Natural waterproof mascara can be removed – unlike many conventional waterproof formulas – without aggressive removers. The key: an oil-based or biphasic makeup remover that gently breaks down the natural waxes and film formers in the formula.
