Hanover, 03/24/2023 - For the second time, the lavera Thomas Haase Foundation in the Hanover region has carried out the environmental project E-Waste-Race, in which schools collect electronic waste such as cables, monitors, or even irons from private households. With a total of 2,376 collected electronic waste items, IGS Süd Langenhagen is this year’s winner of the E-Waste-Race.
Part of this project also includes lessons in which students engage with topics like recycling and the circular economy. They learn that waste—especially electronic waste—is a valuable resource that must be properly disposed of. Furthermore, they learn how they can make a difference through their environmental commitment and reach and activate many people through self-initiated media work. As a prize, the students can look forward to a trip to the Environmental Experience Center in Bremen, made possible by the lavera Thomas Haase Foundation. The 2nd E-Waste-Race was a complete success: The 10 participating schools collected a total of 17,167 pieces of electronic waste from private households in the race for sustainability—that’s 4,710 pieces (38%) more than the previous year. The sustainability project also receives support at the political level: This year, the Ministry of Education and Hanover’s Mayor, Belit Onay, were won over as patrons.
