Gehrden, 21.12.2023 - Rain, slippery conditions, and lots of snow could not stop the 226 participants from 10 schools from collecting electronic waste parts from private households between November 13 and December 6. In a neck-and-neck race, the Gehrden primary and secondary school managed to win the competition.

Deputy Regional President Petra Rudsack and Prof. Hans Fleisch from the Lavera Thomas Haase Foundation congratulated the winners of the 3rd E-Waste Race Region Hannover & City Area. They have won a school trip to the Universum in Bremen.

Since 2022, the E-Waste Race has also been taking place in Lower Saxony thanks to the initiators "Das macht Schule" and the "Lavera Thomas Haase Foundation," and it has now become an E-Waste Race hero in the national comparison. Due to the great willingness to participate, the Lavera Thomas Haase Foundation together with "Das macht Schule" will conduct two electronic waste collection campaigns per year in Hanover and the surrounding region starting in 2023.

The current race was once again a complete success, thanks to the support of regional media, the public, and the participating schools that are willing to give more space to environmental education. And of course, the young environmental activists who take part in the race with passion and fun.

“At our 2nd E-Waste Race 2023 focusing on the Hannover region, 226 students once again achieved something great despite the challenging winter conditions, collecting around 11,000 electronic waste items from private households. We congratulate the Gehrden Primary and Secondary School on their victory. With a phenomenal 2,955 electronic waste items and 2,322 points, the 19 participants from the school set a new collection record and show how much can be achieved together. And that, even though still functional items like a waffle iron were not used for scoring in the competition but were rather kept for further use. We thank everyone who actively participated and congratulate the students who have more than earned the school trip to the Universum in Bremen.”

“The project was great because not only could you see that the students learned something about environmental protection and recycling of e-waste, but it also greatly encouraged and promoted cohesion, shared enthusiasm, and the desire to win. The students have become more independent and dared to approach strangers at the weekly market, call unfamiliar people to arrange pickup appointments, etc. Each individual grew through the project.”
